Villerupt is a commune in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region in Northeastern France. It is located on the departmental border with Moselle, not far from the France–Luxembourg border. In 2020, it had a population of 10,098.
A festival takes place in the commune each year in October-November.
Inhabited since Neolithic times, as evidenced by the remains found there, the territory of Villerupt was mainly developed in the Middle Ages, from the hands of the kingdom of France and Germany. Facing the work of iron ore, the town became famous in the seventeenth century in the technique of blast furnace, before seeing its steel business to stop in the 1970s.
Villerupt has an interesting religious heritage to discover during a stay in the area. Be seduced by the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady of the early twentieth century listed building, the Holy Cross Chapel Cantebonne, the oratory to the Virgin or the large cross visible in the seventeenth century 1 rue Carnot.
During your walk in the heart of the city, you can also discover a former stately home of the early eighteenth century, honeycomb wall of the former steel plant Aubrive or cage mill after the mill site of Micheville and a locomotive old woman who used to transport iron ore.
Before leaving the town, do not forget to admire the old housing estates of the early twentieth century or to go to city hall to see the exhibition Guerino Angeli, a former miner originally from Villerupt become a painter.
