Basic meaning=watery place |
Place names using the term
A place near water. The water does not have to be a literal sea but could be a river. A prime example is London's Chelsea which grew inland from an area now called "World's End". It was a landing place for limestone (chalk) brought downstream on barges, to be used in the contruction of buildings throughout the London area.
