PLACE NAMES

Bours

Bours is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France.

A farming village located 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Arras on the D89 road, in the valley of the river Clarence.

Sights include:
  • The church of Sainte-Austreberthe, dating from the eleventh century.
  • The (restored) castle donjon, also from the eleventh century. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1965, the keep of Bours is a medieval tower located in the charming rural village. It is a rare preserved example of a knight's residence in northern France. Donjon de Bours was most likely built in the 12th century by Hugues de Bours. Originally it would have had a bailey defended by a crenellated wall guarding several outbuildings. Both the bailey and the castle would have been moated. At present all traces of the bailey are gone.

Bours Castle is built out of sandstone and has a rectangular plan with six corbelled turrets. It has walls of 70 cm thick and 2 floors. It is generally assumed that during the mid-13th century the keep would have been higher.

During the first half of the 15th century the castle was owned by Maillotins de Bours who restored and enlarged the castle but probably did not change the keep. In 1543 Bours Castle was burned down.

At the beginning of the 20th century there was talk of demolishing the keep but luckily that did not happen. During the second half of the 20th century the keep was restored several times and used as a town hall.
  • Belval Abbey: In the 16th century, the Sire of Bours was lord of this hamlet in the village of Troisvaux. 3 kilometers from Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise, come and discover the 19th century abbey, today a site with a vocation of social and solidarity economy, as well as its famous cheese.
  • Château de Cercamp: This magnificent estate located in Frévent is classified as a Historic Monument. Its history has several facets: Cistercian abbey, wool weaving factory, residence of the barons of Fourment and others. Today restored by a passionate owner, this site is worth a visit.
