Donzenac

Donzenac is a commune in the Corrèze department in central France.

Commune of the urban area of Brive-la-Gaillarde located in the Massif Central on the national road N20, 10 km north of Brive-la-Gaillarde

Perched on an outcrop dominating the Maumont, resulting from the confluence of the Maumont Blanc and the Maumont Noir. Another tributary of the Maumont, the Clan stream waters the western part of the communal territory.

The Château district, Donzenac, a former fortified village, still retains its medieval appearance with its high walls, narrow, winding lanes that all return to the Church district.

The village of Travassac, located 3 km above the town, is one of the most important hamlets of the commune. It is a typical village once inhabited by slate workers who worked in the quarry.

This hamlet is home to a vertically operated former open slate quarry. This unique site in Europe is now open to the public.

Donzenac is a charming medieval town with old houses covered in grey-blue slates from the slate quarries in Travassac. Donzenac is explored on foot at your own pace, to discover its fortified doors, like the Tilleul door formerly named Maleguise, its ramparts and its timber-framed houses. Among its architectural treasures are the bell tower of the Church of St. Martin, a Gothic feature from the 13th century, whose church contains an old enamelled shrine; the castle of the barons of Donzenac, built at the highest point of the town's oldest district; the Chapel of the White Penitents, built in the 17th century on the remains of an old castle's arms room; and the 13th-century house on Rue du Puy Broch, one of the oldest in the Limousin.

Three kilometres to the east of the town of Donzenac, amid countryside shaped by humankind over the centuries, you can discover the incredible Pans de Travassac site. This exceptional site with impressively steep walls is open from May to the end of October. You can learn all about the slate-quarry worker's trade, with a trip to the bottom of a slate vein and a visit to a small museum.
