Murviel lès Béziers

Murviel-lès-Béziers is a commune in the Hérault department in the Occitainie region in southern France.
Located south of the Pech Bellet, overlooking the plain of the Orb is the château. This is a castle with a large terrace overlooking the old town. The town hall is located there since 1861.
The geometric complexity of the whole castle says it has been redesigned or rebuilt several times. The word castrum implies a strong military occupation. All current castle takes the form of a square wave. Thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to (100 years war, invasion of the Black Prince), closed walls were the guarantee of survival possible. The current route of the village, by the direction of the streets, gives the approximate direction of the boundary walls. The castle was the military and political center for the area. Its military power contributed to the fame of his masters, the Marquis de Murviel who sat in the Languedoc States until the Revolution.
Between 1096 and 1100, the Bishop of Beziers "gives the church of Saint John of Murviel at the altar of St. Saviour Gellone to the Lord's Cross and St Guilhem to Abbe Berenger and monks of the said place."
The first written mention of the church found shows that there are two churches: a parish church and a feudal church.
The parish church of Saint John the Evangelist is located outside the walls of the city, on the road to Causses.
In the fourteenth century, it is likely that, as in all Béziers, hamlets were abandoned and the population moved within the city. This influx made necessary the expansion of castle church which was completed in 1423.
The parish church was attacked by the Huguenots. Its ruin was completed so that the so-called Huguenots do not install it as a fort.
The present church consists of a single nave with three bays, flanked by side chapel of square. The building is equipped with buttresses. The nave is covered with vaults intersecting ribs emblazoned with keys.
The church is open every morning, a tour guide is available at the inside and tourist office of Pech.
