Craon is a French commune with 4486 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Mayenne department in the Pays de la Loire region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Château-Gontier. Residents of the commune are called Craonnaises.
Gregory of Tours names a place Cracatonnum, vicus of the Civitas Andecavorum, as a predecessor of this community. Craon was a remarkable medieval fortress consisting of 27 towers and 1600 meters of ramparts that served to secure France's border with Brittany. The lords of Craon were among the first barons of Anjou. In the 8th Huguenot War (1585-1598), Craon was besieged by the royal army but was horrified by the Spanish troops who had landed in Brittany.
