Maçka is a town and district of Trabzon Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. The name derives from the medieval Greek Matzouka, which was one of the provinces of the Empire of Trebizond. In Ottoman times, the area formed the nahiye of Maçuka.
A few miles up a steep valley accessible only in summer months, is the Altindere National Park - containing 800 species of plant life not found anywhere else in the world.
Hidden in this isolated valley is the 4th century Sumela Monastery, built into the cliff face.
