Lowestoft - "Hlothver's dwelling place" (or building site). In Domesday Lothu Wistoft.

Lowestoft is Suffolk's second largest town (second to Ipswich). The town contains a variety of business and residential areas, with the main shopping centre lying just to the north and the award-winning Blue Flag beaches to the south.

The one main pier in Lowestoft is The South Pier situated on Lowestoft Harbour. The other pier is called the Claremont Pier, which originally served as a port of call for steamers travelling to and from London. The Claremont Pier structure itself has been closed for many years, is now in a state of disrepair and not open to the public, though the building at the land end is still in use.

Lowestoft railway station is centrally placed within the town, within walking distance of the beach, and provides services to Ipswich on the East Suffolk Line. Many services also continue to Ipswich along the main line from London Liverpool Street. Services also run to Norwich along the Wherry Line. All services are operated by National Express East Anglia.

Located on the most easterly point of the British Isles, Lowestoft provides an ideal holiday location for all ages. With a mix of vibrant sandy beaches, pleasant seaside walks and quality family attractions all set within a traditional seaside town.

The town is renowned for the quality of its golden sandy beaches, with the beaches at North and South of Claremont Pier considered to be some of the very best in Europe, both currently holding FEE Blue flag Awards. The beaches and seafront promenade provide a mix of the old and new, with popular seaside activities such as Donkey Rides, Victorian Seafront Gardens and new attractions such as the musical Royal Plain Fountains and the roller-skating rink at Claremont Pier. The seafront also plays host to many popular events including the annual Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival.

Lowestoft has a rich maritime heritage, which is told, through a number of the town’s museums and heritage walks. For a unique insight into the past life of a Lowestoft fishing trawler, step on board the floating museum 'Mincarlo’ on Heritage Quay or visit the recently refurbished Lowestoft & East Suffolk Maritime Museum.

Those wishing to taste some local delicacies then a trip to a local fishmonger or one of the traditional smokehouses in town is a must visit.

Shoppers visiting Lowestoft are well catered for with three unique shopping experiences to sample. The town centre provides all the national high street names, with Kirkley offering a choice of independent stores and the historic High Street providing an opportunity to shop at a number of independent retailers in one of the most historical parts of the town. A number of restaurants to suit all tastes can be found in the, with fish & chips on the promenade a must!

The town is home to a wide range of quality attractions from museums, wildlife parks, piers, a theme park, stately home and other facilities that provide something for everyone.

Evening entertainment centres around The Marina Theatre, which provides a number of high quality acts throughout the year and is also the eastern residence of the internationally acclaimed Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.. There is also a cinema showing all the latest films and a number of wine bars and clubs.
