PLACE NAMES

Montpezat-de-Quercy

Montpezat-de-Quercy, literally Montpezat of Quercy, is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne departement in the Occitanie region in southern France.

Montpezat-de-Quercy is situated 35 km (22 mi) north of Montauban. The commune has been listed as a protected town, mainly thanks to its 14th-century church, which contains tapestries from the sixteenth century relating the life of St Martin.

Montpezat-de-Quercy, a fortified town in Quercy Blanc, is typical of the area with its central square with covered galleries and its half-timbered houses. This charming place has a glorious past, with the illustrious Des Prés family having left the village with some remarkable features. Indeed, in the 14th century, Cardinal Pierre des Prés erected the beautiful Southern European Gothic-style Collegiate Church of St. Martin. Two centuries later, at the initiative of Jean IV des Prés, who was the Bishop of Montauban at the time, tapestries depicting the life of St. Martin were specially created for the chancel in the collegiate church. This wonderful series of Flemish draperies has been well-preserved and is greatly admired by lovers of ancient tapestries. On top of this gem comes another treasure, made up of religious statues and wedding chests.

Sights include:
  • The Saint-Martin collegiate church, fourteenth century, with its Flemish tapestries retracing the life of Saint-Martin of Tours.
  • The door of the City, 14th century.
  • The alleys and the square with the typical half-timbered houses.
  • The manor of the Borde des Pres, 14th century.
  • The 7 churches of hamlets and especially the church of Saux.
