Hauterives has the particularity of being located on the left bank of the Tarn without any road access. The connection with the village is made by a small cable car for all that is goods and mail, and by boat to pass on the other side of the Tarn for people. There are also footpaths from La Malène or Sainte Enimie which lead to the village.
The village is overlooked by the castle of Hauterives, today in ruins. Built in the 12th century, this castle, which is particularly difficult to access, served, among other things, to protect the Causse Méjean and to monitor the valley. However, during the first quarter of the seventeenth century, the castle is gradually abandoned and when the Revolution occurs, it is already destroyed.
Today, there are only two impressive wall sections, remnants of what was a very high dungeon.
The site is difficult to access, as the hamlet and the old small town castral: you have to cross the Tarn via a ferry or take a long way from the village of Sainte-Enimie.
The ruins of the castle are still private property but can be observed during a hike, following a route along the sinuous and deep gorges of the Tarn.
