Cumwhitton is a small picturesque village situated some nine miles from Carlisle, 16 miles from Penrith and seven from Brampton.
The church is dedicated to St Mary, and records here show that there has been a church here since the 13th century...possibly a lot earlier.
Nearby is a 'bleak, hilly, trackless waste', where Henry VI encamped after the battle of Hexham..thus giving the area the name 'King Harry'. Close is the remains of a druidical circle know as Grey Yauds.
Water from springs on 'King Harry' have a reputation for being some of the purest in the country.
