Talkin is within easy reach of the M6 motorway and the A69 Carlisle to Newcastle road.
Back over four hundred years ago (1552 to be precise) Talkin being a border town meant that there had to be strong regulations to protect the local community.
Apparently every night at least twelve local villagers would be needed to guard that point near the village where the river could most easily be crossed by 'Moss Troopers' who would have been intent on cattle stealing and destroying homesteads and crops.
In the past agriculture was the main occupation, coal was also mined in the fells during the 19th century and miners would have lived in the village. Disused limestone and stone quarries can still be seen hereabouts, including indications that the Romans at one time quarried here.
Two pubs are hereabouts 'The Hare and Hounds' and 'The Blacksmiths Arms'.
The biggest attraction her is Talkin Tarn Country Park which offers 165 acres of woodland and pasture.
