Papcastle is a village one mile north-west of Cockermouth. Here was the Roman fort of 'Derventio'...now nearly obliterated by buildings and the road...worth looking for though.

The barrack block and commandants bath house were excavated in 1961-2 and the large fort of just over six acres appears to have housed a cavalry unit. Regretfully stones from the fort have been plundered over the years for building in the surrounding areas. Cockermouth Castle is a good example of that. To date the fort has never been fully excavated.

Papcastle village is much the same as it was some 200 years ago.

A mile off the line of the Roman road to Maryport is a marked footpath known locally as 'Wet Lonning'.
