Portinscale is a village one mile west of Keswick on the north west bank of Derwentwater. It is a gateway to the bautiful Newlands Valley and the west bank of Derwentwater where breathtaking views can be seen all the way to Grange in Borrowdale.
The only two marinas on Derwentwater are found just south of the village, Derwentwater Marina and Nicol End, where canoes, rowing, and sailing boats can be hired. The ferry which frequently circulates the lake calls at Nichol End.
Half a mile south of the village is the magnificent mansion of Lingholm where the gardens are open to the public from Spring to Autumn.
The most famous local here was one John Graves...three times Lord Mayor of Manchester. Upon retiring to Portinscale he decided to build a mansion in keeping with his position, and decided on one of Gothic grandeur on the edge of the lake...even though he was repeatedly warned that the ground was far too boggy to hold such a weight. As to be expected, the ground sank taking his mansion with it.
