Hallbankgate is a village midway between Carlisle and Alston at the northern end of the Pennines.
Just outside the village is 'TheKirkhouse' once itself a considerable industrial centre.
The local pub 'The Belted Will' was at one time closed down by Rosalind, the Countess of Carlisle, after which it became the 'Temperance Hotel' reverting back to its original state in the 1970s.
The village church situated just outside the village stands on ground which has has a church since 1169.
At one time a railway ran through the village, and locals will proudly tell you that George Stephenson's famous 'Rocket' ended its working life here and was later presented to Kensington Museum by the Thompson family.
