Welton village is situated some eight and a half miles from carlisle on the B5299 road to Caldbeck. The school here..Stoney Cross...is just along the Sebergham road, and dates back to 1745. Close by the church of St James was opened in 1873 having been built of local stone...a lot of it from the now defunct Sebergham Hall.
Welton is undoubtedly famous as being the home of the Cumberland Farmers Foxhounds who are kennelled along the Borrans Hill Road. The opening meet is usually held on the first Saturday in November..at which time one can expect to see a crowded village all watching the Master and two huntsmen in hunting pink, plus many other riders around the green, and drinking the stirrup cup in front of the 18th century Royal Oak Pub.
