Underskiddaw is parish comprising the villages of Millbeck, Applethwaite, Ormathwaite, Brundholme and Thrushwood.
It was in 1880 that the woollen mills at Applethwaite and Millbeck provided employment.
It was Applethwaite that produced blankets, whilst Millbeck once a corn mill - later turning to wool - sending blankets, caps and bonnets to all parts of the world.
In 1903 the Millbeck Mill was converted into Millbeck towers and is now owned by the National trust.
Applethwaite Mill is now a private house.
