Woodend is a quiet dormitory hamlet literally tucked away between the A595 Whitehaven to Egremont road, and the A5086 Cleator to Egremont road, close to the banks of the River Ehen.
At one time it was a busy iron-ore mining area, and the village was, no doubt, an important junction between the mines and the railway shunting yard at close by Moor Row. A row of railway cottages is built here, with Woodend railway station being a popular freight link. The railway as such, doesn't unfortunately stop here anymore, but the old station master's house is still here and still occupied (though not by the station-master), and the adjoining waiting rooms are now converted into an attractive bungalow.
Hidden behind the trees is Clintz Quarry, a protected conservation site, where rare species of wild flowers may be seen. Close by too is Woodend Mill, one time corn mill, and the Longlands Lake and Country Park...once an iron ore pit and flooded over in 1938.
