Ayside is a tiny hamlet situated some three miles from Newby Bridge at Lake Windermere's southern-most tip.
It is a delightfully pretty spot with many colourful gardens...twice in fact in recent years winning the prettiest small village competition.
Not so very long ago clogs and shoes were made and repaired in the village, and near to the main road is the old house where carters and drivers would stop for a change of horses.
Heading towards High Newton will be found a quarry, and here it was that a man lived perfectly happily for many years beneath an upturned boat. The family butcher here has been in business for over 100 years.
