Stainton with Adgarley lies one and a half miles from Dalton, and about halfway between Barrow in Furness and Ulverston.
There are many old farm cottages around, quite a few dating back to the early 18th century, the oldest of which is adjacent to Stainton Hall, and is believed to have been converted from the Hall's stables.
Stainton Hall (the Manor House) itself, is a most impressive building. It is believed that the ancestors of george Washington actualy built the Hall though as yet this has not been proven. The Hall is distinctive for its mullioned windows and huge high chimney stacks. Part of the Hall was demolished by cannon fire during the Civil War.
The village green at Stainton was one of the centres for cockfighting and to this day the remains of the cockfighting ring can still be seen.
Within the village and boundary evidence exists of a Bronge Age burial ground together with Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements have been found. Two pubs hereabouts...the Farmers Arms and the Miners Arms, each indeliby showing the area's connections with farming and iron-ore mining.
