Sedgwick is situated some four miles south of Kendal.
The original village buildings are mostly gathered around the area of the Post Office and along the main road. One of the most interesting pieces of architecture in Sedgwick is the canal bridge built by John Rennie.
It was in 1869 that the village was altered considerably, when the Wakefield family from Sedgwick brought the gunpowder indistry to the area, and additionally built many of the cottages for their estate, and many others of their workers. A local builder today by the name of Willacy is a direct descendant of the builder who undertook so much of the work in the village.
It was on the Sedgwick House tennis courts that the first competitive festival in the country took place. The Mary Wakefield Music Festival is now held biennially in Kendal.
