The holiday resort of Fügen is considered to be the main village of the anterior Zillertal valley.
Part of the municipal territory of Fügen are also Gagering, Kleinboden, Kapfing, Haidach and parts of Finsing. Already in Bronze Age the area was settled, a fact that is documented by urn tombs that were found. Mentioned for the first time in the 12th century, in the 15th century Fügen gained importance as industrial centre of the Zillertal valley, as cannonballs and plate for armour were produced. Today the municipal area of Fügen is seat of one of Europe's largest sawmill enterprises, which is Binder Holz with its "FeuerWerk - WoodAdventureWorld Fügen".
In summer the Zillertal valley offers a vast network of hiking trails including 1,000 km, as well as some 850 km of mountain bike trails. After an exhausting outdoor day you might want to relax in the thermal baths of Fügen, the "Erlebnistherme Zillertal", offering not only the longest and most spectacular adventure slide of western Austria boasting a length of 133 m, but also bubbling grottos and much more. However, those who prefer experiencing the valley in a very comfortable way can do a ride with the Zillertal Railway running between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. There are also three stops in the municipal area of Fügen, which are Gagering, Fügen-Hart and Kapfing.
In winter, two skiing areas are available: on the one hand Hochfügen, connecting the skiing areas Hochfügen and Skioptimal Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach, offers 88 km of ski slopes and 39 lift facilities. On the other hand there is the Spieljochbahn skiing area, offering 25.5 km of well-groomed slopes and 11 lift facilities. The latter is particularly popular with families, as it is rather small but mighty. Finally a curiosity: did you know that Fügen was the place where the famous Christmas song "Silent Night, Holy Night" started spreading out in the world? How did that come about? The organ builder Karl Mauracher brought this song from Oberndorf in Salzburg to Fügen, and from this village it stared spreading from 1832 on thanks to the "Zillertaler Nationalsänger" choir.
Our recommendation: the museum of local history Fügen presents exhibits concerning the long history of the village. Moreover you can gather information on local associations, customs and local handicraft.
