Igls is a small, pretty village surrounded by forest, on a plateau above the beautiful city of Innsbruck, which lies to the north. The tram and bus link between the two, only 5km (3 miles) apart, means that you can enjoy the best of both worlds - the relaxed village and the cosmopolitan city.
Already in the 19th century Igls has been a popular destination for many summer visitors from Innsbruck. As a consequence, a charming Tyrolean holiday village emerged. As in 1964 and 1976 Innsbruck was host city of the Olympic Winter Games and the natural and artificial luge competitions were held in Igls, this village also drew international attention.
Igls stands for holidays on a sunny plateau! Enjoy the warm sunrays that stroke your skin, while walking along one of plentiful hiking paths at the Patscherkofel mountain and surroundings. The popular Patscherkofel cable car brings you into the world of mountains from May to October. One of the trails takes you to the highest located alpine garden of Austria, where the alpine flora and fauna flourishes in an area comprising two hectares. If you keep on walking, stop for a bite to eat in one of the cosy refuges! Other leisure time activities include playing golf on the 9-hole golf course "Olympia Golf Igls" as well as a cool jump into beautiful Lake Lans. You also have the possibility to enjoy a treatment in the Kneipp facility.
In winter the skiing area Patscherkofel renders Igls a popular holiday destination, characterised by about 18 km of ski slopes. You decide whether to take the wide family slope or the Olympic ski slope, where you can ski in the footsteps of the Austrian ski stars Franz Klammer and Hermann Maier. However, schedule also some calm breaks and enjoy the view on Innsbruck and on the Stubai, Wipptal and Inntal valleys. An interesting fact for families: at the Patscherkofel valley station there is the "Sunny Kids Park".
Our recommendation: above Igls, there is the pilgrimage church "Heiligwasser", which has been built in 1662 after a Marian apparition. The Patscherkofel cable car takes you back to the mountain station, where you can walk to a small Baroque church. Right next to this church, there is a cosy tavern as well as a spring, to which medical properties are attached.
