Großarl is a market town in the St. Johann im Pongau district in the state of Salzburg in western central Austria. The valley Grossarltal got its name from Grossarl.

In a beautiful, fog-free alpine setting, Grossarltal lies ca. 70 km south of Salzburg City of Mozart in the Pongau district.

Grossarltal valley, with its two communities Grossarl and Hüttschlag, separates the Hohe Tauern and Niedere Tauern ranges. It is an arm of the Radstädter Tauern and thus the easternmost of the Tauern valleys. And with a total length of 27 km, it is one of the longest of the Tauern valleys along with Gasteinertal and Raurisertal. It extends from the Arlscharte (elev. 2,252 m) in Hohe Tauern National Park, via Hüttschlag (1,020 m) and Grossarl (924 m) all the way to Liechtensteinklamm Gorge.

Due to its unusually high concentration of mountain huts, Grossarltal has been aptly nicknamed "The Valley of Mountain Huts". In fact, around 40 huts greet you in Grossarl and Hüttschlag. "The world's most charming cul-de-sac", Grossarltal is a popular destination year-round, also offering magnificent hiking, mountaineering and mountain-bike tours in summertime.

Other sports and recreational activities, including swimming, tennis, mini golf, beach volleyball, angling, wellness and walking, play an important role in Grossarltal as well. For the children, we have brought the magic of the mountains down into the valley - at our big adventure playground "Rucki Zucki's Gaudi-Alm", big and small have an utterly enjoyable time.

In winter, the valley is famous for its outstanding skiing opportunities, part of the Ski amadé alliance - the greatest skiing enjoyment in all of Austria. 73 kilometers of pistes and other great offers including "Skikeriki", free WiFi, Oases of Relaxation, fun & children's areas add the perfect finishing touches. This makes the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area a perfect destination for all ability levels as well as families.
