Ried im Zillertal is a municipality in the Schwaz district in the Austrian state of Tyrol.

It extends along the Riedbach river on the left bank of the Ziller river. The name "Ried" probably derives from the Bavarian word for "clearing". The emblem of the village with the three golden hands on red background has got two meanings: on the one hand these hands are meant to represent the hard-working population, on the other hand the famous glove producers and traders of Ried. By the way: the village is also the home-town of the famous Austrian singer and presenter Marc Pircher!

Worthwhile is also the Via Crucis at Riedbach. Starting at the bridge, it takes you past bronze statues to the next sight, which is the Riedberg chapel surrounded by the forests of Ried. In summer the mountains of the Zillertal Alps characterise the offer regarding leisure time activities in the calm holiday resort. Beside cycling tours along the Ziller river as well as swimming and inline skating you can of course enjoy hiking and climbing. The Zillertal Alps also include the homonymous nature park, extending on a surface of 2,500 sqkm. It is the largest nature reserve of the Alps and the habitat for animals such as grass snake and crossed viper, golden eagle and lammergeier, marmot, mountain sheep and ibex.

In winter, from the neighbouring village of Kaltenbach you can reach the ski region Hochfügen, offering 88 km of perfectly-groomed ski slopes. Also for cross-country skiers there are several trails in the surroundings. Of particular interest is also the Hintertux Glacier, which is a whole-year round skiing area. The funicular taking you up an altitude of 3,000 m asl is called "Gletscherbus" and is considered to be one of the most impressive lift facilities of the Alps. Moreover the panoramic view stretching from the Dolomites to the Zugspitze mountain is fabulous and unforgettable!

Our recommendation: you love animals? So we recommend you to visit the vivarium "Schönblick" at the homonymous tavern. Deer, fallow deer, eagle owls, rabbits and even Père David's deer can be observed in this animal park, which is reachable via the locality Taxach.
