Standing on a busy highway, with the traffic roaring through it, Hilton has apparently very little to show.
The unhappy Mary Queen of Scots came this way on her journey to Tutbury Castle, one of the many prisons she was to know before she reached Fotheringhay. It is said that she called at the timber-framed Old Hall by the roadside, which was Hilton’s glory in olden days, built perhaps five centuries ago and known as Wakelyn, from the old family whose home it was.
