Shirland Village two miles from Alfreton, is an ancient settlement the history of which is intimately connected with the famous family of the Greys of East Derbyshire. The Revil family are also commemorated here.
The busy road to Chesterfield runs between its little green and the fine old church which has seen five centuries go by. It is adorned with battlements and pinnacles, eight of them crowning the fine tower. The porch with a vaulted roof, has a niche over the door in which sits a modern St Leonard.
The monumental recess in the church is probably a memorial of Sir Henry Grey (fourteenth century). There are many effigies, tombs, etc of the Greys. Also to be seen is a (chained) copy of Jewell’s Apology of 1609. The register dates from 1675.
Golf enthusiasts will be interested in learning that a warm welcome is extended to all visitors to the Shirland Golf Club. This established 18 hole course is set in an attractive rural setting with pleasant views of the Derbyshire countryside. Since it opened in 1976 many improvements have been made to the course including extensions to greens and tees, drainage work and extensive tree planting.
