Milford grew into a flourishing village with the coming of the Strutts shelters under steep wooded cliffs by the Derwent. It was Jedediah Strutt who built the cotton mills about 1780 and the house where he spent the last years of his life.
The Strutts made the bridge over the river; they gave the village its school and the site for the church of 1848. The east window of this is to George Herbert Strutt who was born here and who built the grammar school at Belper.
