Road and river run through it side by side until the Trent swings under a modern bridge towards its meeting with the Derwent near Wilne.
Downstream will be found the Trent and Mersey Canal, constructed by James Brindley and opened in 1777.
In the late 18th and 19th centuries, Shardlow was an important inland port.
It still has old warehouses and a fine stone-fronted Hall of the 17th and 18th centuries, now a national agricultural advisory centre.
