Over Haddon is a hardy little village in upland country with endless stone-walled fields, glorying in its place above the Lathkill Dale. It sees the river, only three miles old, shining among the rocks and trees of this enchanting valley, leaping weirs and filling trout pools on its way to the mediaeval Conksbury Bridge, charming with its high wall and low arches.
It has old stone houses and a late 19th century church, looking over the dale to Youlgreave's fine old tower.
The village story is of Martha Taylor, a story rare enough to have found its way into many books.
Born here in the 17th century, and an invalid from a child, she lived for a whole year with only a few drops now and then of sugar and water, syrup of prunes, and the juice of a raisin. She was then 18 and she lived on after that for another 17 years.
