A slow drip of water in a shady lane, and a farmhouse with a great brick building on the lovely road to Kedleston, tell of the fame that might have come to Quarndon, for one was a spring of precious water, and the other an inn built by Lord Scarsdale who hoped this spring would make the place a busy spa.
It did not happen, for an earthquake is said to have disturbed the vigour of the spring. But Quarndon still has its charming situation among the rolling hills, though now only just beyond the grasp of Derby, and seen from the farmhouse is a pretty picture of a village climbing to its church.
This church of the hilltop, with a fine view of Derby's towers and spires, was newly built in 1874, and has good woodwork in the pulpit and the stalls, finely carved altar rails and a font of Derbyshire spar.
