This tiny village shares the name of the dale in which it lies, one of the loveliest in Derbyshire, a reach of the River Wye under whose magnificent limestone cliffs are the glory of wild flowers in spring and surpassing scenes in winter snow.
There are old houses and the textile mills from which the dale took its former name of Millhouse Dale, and opposite the weir is a small church of 1880, built by Samuel Andrew, vicar of the mother church at Tideswell, where we see his finely engraved brass.
The rocky gorge of Monk's Dale climbs from the middle of the village. On the hillside are the foundations of a chapel of the monks, and a fine fragment of a 14th century` stone screen found here is now in Tideswell church.
Just upstream is the luxuriant Chee Dale with its magnificent Tor rising 300 feet, rent with fissures and crowned with a fringe of trees. With the Wye rushing round its foot in a grand horseshow curve, it is one of the finest scenes on a river of great beauty.
Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Peak District, in the delightful Millers Dale, many visitors cannot fail to be attracted to a converted old Mill, alongside the River Wye, and which has become well known as 'The Home of Woodturning'. This mill has long been the base of Craft Supplies Ltd, reputed leaders in the field of woodturning. Here at the Mill once can view and buy superb works of art, in the Gallery turned by famous woodturners, skilled in this ancient and beautiful art.
The Mill also boasts a well stocked shop and timber store, which will certainly fascinate those interested in crafts, and in particular, woodturning. The company are famous for their residential woodturning courses which are also held at the Mill. On arrival at Millers Dale you may be luck enough to view one of the regular woodturning demonstrations which take place here.
