It is a lovely and winswept place that, until 1977 when the village became a conservation area, had appeared to have had better days. The population of this prosperous upland village (with something of the appearance of a market place and market home) had plummetted to 364 in 1981. But since the various buildings have been sympathetically restored and craftsmen can be seen at work in the Market House.
Today, Longnor is an enchanting place with an old-world and timeless quality about it and, visited on a fine day, will leave an ending impression on the visitor. There are good places to eat and meals are served all day in the Market House.
Nearby is some of the best scenery to be seen on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border and Longnor is an ideal touring centre for exploring upper Dovedale and the glorious Manifold Valley. Within site of the village are the only true mountain type hills in Derbyshire, High Wheeldon, Parkhouse and Chrome Hills, and the chance to explore these and the surrounding villages of Earl Sterndale, Crowdecote and especially, Hollinsclough should not be missed.
