Visitors will almost certainly notice Fox House - a large detached building on the main Sheffield to Hathersage road at Longshaw.
At one time the property was a one up and down shepherds cottage with outbuildings built by one George Fox, and presumably is from whence the name originated. However there was a Nicholas Fox in this area in 1399 - so who knows - the name may be well down to him.
The licence for Fox House dates from 1816 and at that time was called The Travellers Rest. The road junction outside the inn is believed to be the Whitecross from Charolotte Bronte's book Jane Eyre...and is where Jane Eyre was set down from the coach during her flight north.
