Little Longstone

Sheltering under Longstone Edge, this quiet hamlet is undoubtedly a joy to find, with its remains of the old stocks and charming houses on its mile-long road.
One of the houses is the twin-gabled manor behind fine hedges of holly and yew, built perhaps in the 17th century by one of the Longsdons who have lived at Little Longstone all the time, (but not always at the manor house).
At the end of the road, at Monsal Head - sometimes known as Headstone Head - is a surprise in store for all who come, for with startling suddenness there opens out one of the finest natural sights in Derbyshire, a glory of rock and wood and water. It is a view of the Wye deep down in the valley, flowing at the foot of fine hills as it comes from Millers Dale, and making a glorious curve round the foot of Putwell Hill on its journey through the lovely Monsal Dale. It is an enchanting river scene, where the Wye forgets its impetous ways and flows in broad and gentle fashion, now through bright green meadow, now mirroring the lofty hills.
